Validating Epidemiology with Healthcare Claims Data
During the COVID-19 pandemic, official federal health statistics showed a discrepancy in excess mortality that could not be fully explained by confirmed case counts. Federal health officials needed a more accurate way to measure the pandemic's true toll to inform national policy.
The Craft Data team collaborated with a European national health agency to pioneer a novel methodology using healthcare billing records to track epidemiological trends. By analyzing 192,131 death records and linking them to payer claims data, the team reconstructed the patient journey to identify "COVID-associated" deaths that were missed by standard clinical reporting.
