Applying Genomics Methodology to Patient Journeys
Standard healthcare analytics treats each clinical event as an isolated row — it cannot capture the sequence that defines a patient journey. In diabetes care, for example, this makes it impossible to distinguish a patient who develops complications early from one who stays stable for years. Identifying those distinct trajectories is essential for market segmentation, care gap analysis, and targeting the right interventions to the right patient archetypes.
In a Hackathon project, we reimagined patient data by borrowing concepts from genomics:
"Journeys as Genes": We treated clinical events as base pairs in a DNA sequence, allowing us to align and compare patient timelines.
Searchable Variations: Built a prototype that allowed users to query checkup gaps and sequence variations.
Innovation
Demonstrated a completely new paradigm for visualizing longitudinal care gaps.
